Step 1

Connect with Mission West Virginia

Mission West Virginia is a resource for hopeful foster parents. Throughout the process, you can expect to interact with at least one, but probably multiple foster care agencies, in addition to West Virginia’s Department of Human Services (DoHS), and Mission West Virginia is there to support you every step of the way.

Step 2

Connect with an Agency

There are ten foster care agencies across the state. It’s up to you to decide which agency you want to work with. Our FREE info packet has a step-by-step guide to becoming a foster parent with advice on how to decide which agency is the best fit for you.

Step 3

Training and Certification

Training and certification are required for all foster parents in the home and involve a minimum of one home visit. This process typically spans from four to six months. Curious if you qualify? Take our myth-busting quiz.

Step 4

Receive Your First Placement

After you’re certified, you’ll have the chance to specify the age, gender, and number of children you’d like to foster. Then your agency will help identify a good match. Have an idea of what you’re interested in? Start here.
